Our international program

This year we started a new exchange program called The Portal Project. We are working together with 7 Stages Theatre to develop a way to make affordable and frequent international exchange a reality in Atlanta. The "portal" can be accessed from either direction and the goal is to both send our work to other cities and countries on a regular basis, and to bring new work to Atlanta.

We've had a dozen artists come to Atlanta in 2008 and we have taken an equal number to Europe. These representatives have given workshops and presented work. They have met with other artists and discussed mutual possibilities. Next year we plan to double this number and involve many more local, national and international connections.

It was an exciting year culminating in a co-production with members of Berlin's Gutes Tun Collective, an original show, CopyMe, premiering in Bordeaux, France on December 30th. This show grew out of the Portal Project and mutual interest in open-source work. We met during the 7 Stages production of Doing Good Things in 2007. This was followed by several workshops in Berlin, Buenos Aires, and Atlanta. Now the first phase of this production will premiere in Bordeaux at the Les grandes Traversées Festival and come to Atlanta in 2009.

Our newest film project is an original series involving theater and film artists from PushPush and the Portal Project partners. Titled GRFX, this series tells the story of a publishing house focused on graphic novels and comic books. This series is about how the higher and lower arts relate and help each other as young creative artists move into the 21st Century with new stories and new media. Principle artists on this film series are influential members of groups that produce theater, film, dance and music outside the series itself. It is our hope to connect hundreds of our Portal artists and the tens-of-thousands of audience members we touch yearly, in a new creative endeavor that is financially and creatively self-sustaining.

We are also excited to be working with 7 Stages and English Theater Berlin in presenting the world premiere of C.J. Hopkins's The Extremists in Berlin in February 2009 before returning to Atlanta to host a series of new European work at PushPush in May.

We believe that it is incredibly important for Atlanta to connect with a global community in order to reach its own goals. We have a lot to learn and a lot to offer. We hope you take advantage and also take part.
